The secret of onomatopoeias

2011-09-20

Onomatopoeias can be a bit really hard to understand when it comes to a foreign language because the sounds and spelling of these words differ completely once they conform to some extent to the broader linguistic system they are part of.

Onomatopoeias are graphic representations of sounds and noises made by machines, people, animals, nature and so on. All of them are put into words especially when we read comic books.

Interjections are also spontaneous words, which may express surprise, happiness, pain, etc. Some examples of famous onomatopoeias and interjections are:

ouch (pain)
atchoo (sneeze)
beep-beep (horn)
cough, cough (cough)
ding, dong (doorbell)
yuck (disgust)
chomp (bite)
oops (surprise)
smooch (kiss)
splash (dive),
wow (admiration)
phew (relief)
quack (ducks)
woof-woof (dogs)
moo (cow)
meow (cats)
peep peep (baby birds)
etc.
