Phrasal verbs - part I

What’s a phrasal verb?
It's the combination of a verb + a particle (preposition or adverb) resulting in a new word. The new unit is different from the two separate words. Examples:

break up = end a relationship (Tom and Kate broke up last week)
find out = discover (I don’t know where she lives. How can I find out?)
put off = postpone (They decided to put the meeting off)

Why is it important to learn phrasal verbs?
Phrasal verbs are very frequent in spoken English.  They are often used by native speakers, mainly in informal contexts.  As a big part of the English vocabulary consists of phrasal verbs, if you learn and use common phrasal verbs, your vocabulary will be wider, your listening and reading comprehension will improve, and your spoken English will be more fluent and native-like.
