Improving your reading skills: do's and dont's
2011-06-27

Here are some tips to help you improve your reading skills:
Do’s:
• make a habit of reading regularly: the more you read, the better you get at reading;
• read different sources of English: magazines, novels, newspapers, poems, lyrics, academic articles etc.;
• highlight key words: they’ll help you understand what the text is about;
• read a text more than once, so that important details don’t go unnoticed.
Dont’s
• don't try to understand every single word; try to get the general meaning of a sentence;
• don’t use bilingual dictionaries; use English-English dictionaries instead;
• don’t start with complex reading: start with easy texts and move on to more difficult ones gradually.
