As an active part of the language, idioms play a crucial role in the second language acquisition. A good way to get in contact with them and consequently make them part of our reality is to divide them into categories. Animals, parts of the body, money, food are some of the categories, to mention a few, in which we can find idioms in English. Some of them have similar meaning to Portuguese such as “have a broken heart” or “be the black sheep of the family”, others have completely different meanings as in “food for thought”, which, in spite of being different from our own language, if it is properly contextualized we can easily figure out the meaning. It is essential that we be aware of their importance and make a list of our own to start using them. Internet may help us a lot!
